The Terre Haute Sanitary Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to begin environmental testing of the soil on the International Paper property as part of the city’s efforts to purchase the land.

The board voted without opposition to begin the testing, known as “phase two” environmental testing, of the site, which includes more than 280 acres of property on the west side of the Wabash River.

“We’re still moving forward on the acquisition” of the land, said City Engineer Chuck Ennis, speaking at the Sanitary Board meeting Tuesday morning in City Hall. The city hopes to use ponds, or “lagoons,” on the property for storage and treatment of combined sewage and rainwater overflows from the city’s sanitary system.

City officials signed a purchase agreement with International Paper in November for the property.
