A Thoughtful Message From Ron Hanks

Posted: January 6, 2010 in Uncategorized
I’m going to just quote Ron below, because I can’t imagine any way to improve on what he’s written.

I just now watched, with much enjoyment—-although in several cases sadness—-Memories, Memories, Memories, the full-screen pictures of friends and co-workers that you published in Boxsite December 24.  What a great contribution that is!!  I saw several folks that have passed on, some of them truly were my friends, and I regret so much that I lost contact with them long before they departed.  I was reminded of the following old poem that I have had a long time.  It’s an admonition to us all to STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FRIENDS!!  And you know, Steve, your website is one of the easy ways of doing it.

A Friend—-Too Late
Around the corner I have a friend
In this great city that has no end,
Yet days go by and weeks rush on
And before I know it, a year is gone
And I never see my old friend’s face;
For life is a swift and terrible race.
He knows I like him just as well
As in the days when I rang his bell,
And he rang mine; we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men—-
Tired with playing a foolish game,
Tired with trying to win a name.
“Tomorrow, say, I will call on Jim,
Just to show I am thinking of him.”
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And the distance between us grows and grows,
Around the corner yet miles away.
“A telegram, sir!”  Jim died today!
And that’s what we get, and deserve in the end:
Around the corner a vanished friend.
