RIP Steve Messmer

BRAZIL, Ind. — Steven E. Messmer, 68, of Brazil, passed away unexpectedly at St. Vincent Clay Hospital, on March 31, 2013. Steve was born in Huntingburg, on Oct. 31, 1944, the son of Clement and Viola (Woerter) Messmer. He graduated from Huntingburg High School with the class of 1962, then graduated from Indiana State University in 1966 with a degree in accounting. Steve worked at IBM in Greencastle, then Weston Paper in Terre Haute, from which he retired in 1998. Following retirement he worked for the Sisters of Providence, at St. Mary-of-the-Woods until 2005. He was currently employed at the Forest Park Golf Course.

As his children were growing up, he volunteered his time coaching baseball with the Clay Youth League, and basketball and baseball at the YMCA. Steve was a devoted member of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Steve volunteered his accounting skills for St. Ann’s Clinic in Terre Haute, the Carmelite Monastery and the Brazil Parks and Recreation Board.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Suzann Schiewer. He is survived by his wife Linda; a daughter, Sally Messmer of Lafayette; two sons, William Messmer and wife Jill of Greenwood, and Paul Messmer and wife Hether of Brazil; grandchildren, Claire Messmer, Matthew Messmer, Maggie Messmer, Gracie Messmer and Nicholas Messmer; a sister, Patty Seckinger of St. Meinrad; two brothers, Paul Messmer and wife Virginia of Jasper, and Bernard Messmer and wife Sharon of Jasper; godchildren, Linda Schmitt and Nyana Lloyd; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Pallbearers will be Randy Schmitt, Jason Messmer, Kevin Messmer, Matt Messmer, Claire Messmer and Nicholas Messmer.
Visitation will be at French Funeral Home, on Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Rosary will be conducted at Annunciation Catholic Church on Thursday prior to mass at 10:30 a.m. Catholic Mass will be held at the church, Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 11 am. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Carmelite Monastery at Carmel of Terre Haute, 59 Allendale Terre Haute, IN 47802.
